Linguistic Panorama of The Arab World

From 18:30 | Workshop | Spanish | IEMed, BarcelonaIgnacio Ferrando offers us a critical tour of the main historical phases of the Arabic language, trying to emphasize the current situation of this language, its particular way of evolving and the question of diglossia, that is, the alternation between a high register and a more colloquial one. The main problems and challenges facing the Arabic language in today’s world are also reviewed.
The lecture is delivered by Ignacio Ferrando, PhD in Semitic Philology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and professor of Arabic at the University of Cádiz, where he teaches in the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies and is a professor in the doctoral program in Arts and Humanities. He also collaborates in the Master’s Degree in Conference Interpreting at the University of Granada. His areas of scientific and research interest include Arabic linguistics, Western Arabic dialectology (especially Andalusian), Andalusian prose and poetry, and the history of Arabic grammar.
